Manage Container Files More Efficiently

How to manage content that is kept in .rvt files as a way to have a warehouse or container file for many items in one file.

What is a Container / Warehouse / Source File?

A Container File (also known as a Warehouse File or Source File) is used to manage content more efficiently by centralizing various components that are used repeatedly. Unlike template files, which are used for new projects, container files hold content for specific types of projects, such as schools, including walls, ceilings, and stairs.

What do you store in a Container File?

Container files can store system types, drafting views, schedules, fill patterns, and other items that can be batch exported. Examples include:

  • System types like walls, roofs, ceilings, duct types, model groups, detail groups, railings, and stairs.

  • Drafting views with pre-drafted details for reuse in different projects.

Changes made to the container file can be batch exported to the Content Catalog, making it easy for the team to find and use the updated content. The Notes option in Content Catalog allows for tracking edits and maintaining a clear history of changes.

You can also upload the Revit project to Content Catalog or store it in an ACC project. This allows for proper permissions to admins, while batch exporting content and tagging appropriately for a Saved Search can make the content visible to end users.
